This explosive 1983 play by Marsha Norman depicts a daughter, Jessie, and her mother, Thelma, and a high-stakes evening spent between the two. The play opens with Jessie calmly telling “Mama” that by morning she'll be dead, as she plans to commit suicide that very evening. She slowly reveals the reasons for her decision and how thoroughly she has planned her own death (all the while nonchalantly organizing the house and preparing to do Mama's nails). The ensuing debate between Jessie and Mama, sometimes quiet, sometimes tempestuous, gives rise to our deepest, most personal questions about life and death.

“If there is such a thing as a benign explosion, this play is it: it detonates with startling quietness, showering us with truth, compassion and uncompromising honesty…”
Jack Kroll, Newsweek
